RAID, RAID, Go Away

Despite the title, I think everything’s working fine. I opened up my box and immediately started to check out the load I had on the PSU (power supply). I knew I had “a lot” going on in there, so I thought the main problem may be drawing too much juice. Here’s just an idea of what I had going on inside that box (lots of other stuff attached externally).

  • Two RAID1 mirrors (4 disks that make up 2 drive letters)
  • One more disk that the OS is installed on
  • Two DVD drives
  • A ton of expansion cards and fans

I started out by simply removing one of the DVD drives (I really didn’t need the 2nd one) and unplugging the 2nd RAID mirror that I didn’t immediately needed.

I’m recreating the heavy disk access that was causing the write errors just yesterday and after a half hour I’m not seeing any errors crop up (they were previously popping up within a few minutes of starting the process before). So after the 30 minutes with no errors, I’m feeling a lot better about the system.

I have another machine in my closet which may have a better PSU, so if that’s the case, I’ll likely do a transplant job this weekend and see about performance with that 2nd RAID array plugged in. The DVD drive is old and I’ll probably just toss it.

This is definitely a load off my mind.
